Blessing marks new chapter for Marlborough Inland Port

The upcoming opening of the Marlborough Inland Port has taken a significant step forward with a blessing ceremony held on-site in December. The blessing, led by Rangitāne, was attended by iwi representatives, QuayConnect, Port Nelson, WineWorks, and Central Express, it was a moment of celebration as the facility prepares to begin operations in the coming weeks.

The Marlborough Inland Port will play a crucial role in supporting the region’s primary industries. Strategically located in Riverlands to streamline freight logistics, the facility will serve as a hub connecting Marlborough to international and national markets.

Jaron McLeod, QuayConnect’s General Manager says the new development will significantly benefit Marlborough importers and exporters. “Having a facility on their doorstep offering container and product storage, as well as warehousing connected to an established logistics service, will better serve the region's businesses,” he said.

The Inland Port will also provide extensive storage capacity for both full and empty containers, alongside facilities for tanker and ISO tank container washing and repairs. This comprehensive service offering is set to strengthen Marlborough's supply chain and enhance its operational efficiency.

Sustainability has been a key focus for the development of the Inland Port. Efforts are being made to reduce the need for truck journeys between facilities by using zero-emission electric tugs. Additionally, the facility has been built to Green Star standards, incorporating features such as rainwater capture for onsite use and electric vehicle charging stations for staff.

An official opening of the Marlborough Inland Port is planned for the end of February.
