Record funds raised for charity at yearly golf tournament

Port Nelson’s Charity Golf Day brings together the port, transport and wine industry together for a day of golf and the opportunity to raise money for charity, this year raising a record $28,000 for New Zealand Riding for Disabled.

Jessica Ammundsen, Communications and Engagement Manager, says the charity golf day has been running for 19 years and has successfully raised over $256,000 for charities. “Having a dedicated event to raise money for charity is an important part of the Port’s sponsorship programme. This event is a great opportunity to support our local community initiatives. Over the years, we have supported LifeLinc, Coastguard, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and this year, we are supporting New Zealand Riding for Disabled (NZRDA).”

The core purpose of NZRDA is to provide interaction with horses to improve health and well-being outcomes for people experiencing disability or who have specific challenges or needs. They aim to enable and support disabled people to achieve good lives, including meaningful participation in and contribution to important life activities and roles in their community. The charity was chosen as a result of a poll from our 320 team members after being put forward by a team member whose child attends.

The event is an important tradition of the Port and its partners and is a highlight event on the calendar each year, “It’s an opportunity to raise money for charity but also to bring together our partners from around Te Tauihu, New Zeland, and as far as Singapore.”

The event is supported by a large number of port partners and vendors through various sponsorship opportunities, including auction items, prizes, and hole sponsorships. “I want to say a massive thank you to our event sponsors, many of whom have been with us since the event's first year.”

Looking ahead to this year's charity golf day, the event is shaping up to be special, as the tournament will be celebrating its 20th anniversary.
