Dangerous Goods

There are restrictions on the dwell time of DG containers that may be held in the Container Terminal:

• Direct to/from Motor vehicle:

All Class 1 must discharge / load direct to or from a motor vehicle with the exception of 1.4G, 1.4S and retail fireworks of 1.3G.

Class 1. Shipping company or agent must seek approval from PNL no less than 5 days in advance of the vessel ETA by email to Harbour Master and Container Operations Manager (Harbourmaster@ncc.govt.nz and paul.williams@portnelson.co.nz) 

• Maximum 24 hours:

• Maximum 72 hours:

All other classes

Containers that dwell beyond the allowable time, places Port Nelson Ltd in breach of the Hazardous Substance Regulations 2017. Failure to collect or deliver cargo within the allowed timeframes will not be accepted. On the rare occasions where this is unavoidable, charges will apply. The charge reflects the risk involved storing and monitoring the DG container and to encourage the collection of the containers within the allowable dwell time.

The only exception to this requirement is when MPI or Customs are exercising their powers in regard to a shipment.

48 hours prior to intended vessel arrival Shipping Lines, Importers or their Agents must arrange supply of relevant documentation for every consignment that carries IMDG Classification that includes but is not limited to the following:

1. Hazardous cargo DG manifest
2. Dangerous Goods Declaration. PNL requires at least a class and subclass DG Classification (ie at least a 2 digits such as Class 2.1) on all declarations. This applies to all types of cargo and must include container numbers.
3. For classes requiring immediate removal the name, address and contact details of the consignee and the contact details of the transport company are required.

• • Containers must be collected within 24 or 72 hours as dictated by the DG Class and sub-class
  • The dwell time for DG cargo commences from the time the container is discharged onto the wharf

Email paperwork no later than 48hrs prior discharge to cargo.reception@portnelson.co.nz. This email will be cleared Monday to Friday 0700 – 1730.

• Containers presented for export must be delivered to the port no earlier than 24 or 72 hours (as dictated by the DG Class and sub-class) before the scheduled departure time of the vessel.
• Prior to arrival at the port, containers must be pre-noted. This must be completed no less than 24 hours before delivery to the Port.  https://cargo.portnelson.co.nz/WebPortal/

The containers presented for export must be accompanied by complete, legible documentation:

1. Hazardous cargo DG manifest – this document is specific to shipping lines.
2. Dangerous Goods Declaration. PNL requires at least a class and subclass DG Classification (ie at least a 2 digits such as Class 2.1) on all declarations and the inclusion of the container number
3. For classes requiring immediate removal the name, address and contact details of the consignee and the contact details of the transport company are required.

If, for any reason, after hours operations are required, an out of hours application can be made and if approval is given by PNL, an ‘after hours’ charge shall apply.
