Port Nelson is an international port located in the city of Nelson. It serves as the key maritime gateway for Te Tauihu and is a vital hub for economic activity in the region. Port Nelson is a key enabler of the region’s continued growth and prosperity. 

Port Nelson handles a wide variety of cargo, including containerised and bulk cargo. Major commodities include forestry products, seafood, pip fruit, and wine. The Port has continued to invest in its infrastructure and now provides a variety of services across marine, logistics, warehousing and property. 

The Chief Executive of Port Nelson will provide visible and dynamic leadership for the organisation, working alongside key stakeholders to deliver on the vision, strategic objectives, and commercial performance of the Port. The Chief Executive will champion a strong culture of health and safety across the business. They will also be highly attuned to the market dynamics affecting the Port and the broader stakeholder environment. 

The ideal candidate should possess the following mix of skills, experiences, and attributes: 

  • Proven executive leadership experience in large and complex environments, specifically in the port, infrastructure, transport or logistics sectors; 
  • Experience in leading a strong culture of health and safety; 
  • Proven ability to develop people and lead change in an organisation; 
  • Strong commercial capability and aptitude; 
  • Strategic thinking ability and experience in leading an organisation in achieving operational excellence; and
  • Proven ability to build and manage a wide range of stakeholder relationships whilst maintaining a strong customer focus. 

This is a critical role for Port Nelson with the opportunity to make a significant impact – facilitating the continued success of the Port and the prosperity of the Te Tauihu region.
